I. Appearance: A Compact and Sturdy “Iron Nugget”

Brothers, when I first laid eyes on the SR500, I thought, “This little thing looks pretty solid!” And sure enough, it’s got an all-metal casing, measuring only 100 x 100 x 23mm, but it feels hefty in your hand, weighing 0.3kg net. This ain’t no plastic toy, it’s a real “iron nugget”!

The front has 8 indicator lights: Power, System, LAN1, LAN2, SIM, Online, WIFI, and 3G/4G. This design is spot-on, you can see the device’s working status at a glance.

The back has two antenna ports, one for 3G/4G and another for 2.4G WiFi (optional). Both ports are SMA female inner hole, 50 ohm impedance, standard configuration.

The side has two network ports (10M/100M auto-adaptive MDI/MDIX ports), a SIM card slot (drawer-type, supports 1.8V/3V SIM/UIM cards), and a reset button. All the interfaces you need are right there.

II. Hardware Configuration: Small but Complete

Memory: 64MB Flash: 16MB (expandable to 32MB) WiFi: Optional 2.4G, supports 802.11b/g/n, max rate 150Mbps Network support: Industrial-grade 4G module, supports seven-mode full network

This configuration might not be top-tier, but it’s more than enough for industrial applications. 64MB of memory ensures smooth system operation, and 16MB of flash is sufficient. Most importantly, it uses an industrial-grade 4G module supporting seven-mode full network, meaning it can connect to the internet wherever there’s a signal.

III. Rich Interfaces: Ready for Various Complex Scenarios

2 LAN ports (LAN1 can be configured as WAN port) 1 SIM card interface 1 reset button 1 3G/4G antenna interface 1 2.4G WiFi antenna interface (optional) 1 DC power interface (2.1mm inner core) 1 power terminal (2-pin 3.81mm spacing connector) 1 Console port (5-pin 3.5mm spacing connector, 1 RS232/1 RS485)

This interface configuration is quite rich. Two network ports meet most networking needs, the SIM card slot makes 4G connection simple, and the Console port facilitates device debugging and management.

IV. Power Characteristics: Wide Voltage Input, Stable and Reliable

Operating voltage: DC 5-36V (expandable to 5-60V) Standby power consumption: 150230mA@12V DC Operating power consumption: 250310mA@12V DC

This wide voltage input range is a major highlight of the SR500. The 5-36V input range covers almost all industrial scenario power supply needs, and if expanded to 5-60V, it becomes even more versatile. The low power consumption design is also impressive, with a maximum operating power consumption of only about 3.72W, which is definitely power-saving in industrial applications.

V. Working Environment: A True “All-Weather Warrior”

Operating temperature: -35~+75℃ Storage temperature: -40~+85℃ Operating humidity: 5%~95% (non-condensing) Heat dissipation: Natural heat dissipation, no noise

Brothers, when I saw this temperature range, I almost fell to my knees! -35 to 75 degrees, this isn’t just “all-weather”, it’s “all-climate”! From Siberia to the Sahara, from Antarctica to the Equator, this little guy can handle it all. Add to that the 5% to 95% humidity range, and this is clearly tailor-made for the harshest industrial environments.

What thrilled me most is the natural heat dissipation design. No fan means no noise and no moving parts that could fail. For industrial sites that need long-term unattended operation, this is a godsend!

VI. Safety and Reliability: An Industrial-Grade “Iron Giant”

IMG_256

In terms of safety and reliability, the SR500 has really pulled out all the stops:

Power reverse protection, overvoltage protection, overcurrent protection

Ethernet interface built-in 1.5KV electromagnetic isolation protection

RS232/RS485 interface built-in 15KV ESD protection

SIM/UIM card interface built-in 15KV ESD protection

Protection level: IP30

Certification: Compliant with CCC, RoHS

MTBF: ≥ 100,000 hours

This string of parameters left me dumbfounded. Multiple power protections, high-voltage isolation for interfaces, ESD protection – this isn’t just a router, it’s practically a mini “bomb shelter”! The IP30 protection level might not be the highest, but it’s sufficient for most industrial environments. And that MTBF (Mean Time Between Failures) is really reassuring – 100,000 hours is equivalent to over 11 years of non-stop operation!

VII. Software Features: Small but Mighty

IMG_256

Network access: Supports APN VPDN Access authentication: Supports CHAP/PAP authentication Network modes: GSM/GPRS/EDGE, WCDMA/HSPA+/EVDO, TD-SCDMA/TD-LTE/FDD LTE LAN protocol: Supports ARP, Ethernet WAN protocol: Supports static IP, DHCP, PPPoE, PPP IP applications: Supports Ping, Trace, DHCP Server, DHCP Relay, DHCP Client, DNS relay, DDNS, Telnet IP routing: Supports routing NAT function: Supports network address translation

These features cover pretty much everything you need. From basic network access to complex routing functions, the SR500 can handle it all with ease. Especially impressive is its comprehensive support for various network modes, ensuring it can work normally in all kinds of network environments.

VIII. Network Security: A Rock-Solid “Data Fortress”

Firewall: Full-state packet inspection (SPI), prevent denial of service (DoS) attacks, filter multicast Ping packets, access control lists, URL filtering, port mapping, virtual IP mapping, IP-MAC binding Data Security: IPsec VPN/L2TP/PPTP/GRE/OPEN VPN/CA certificate

The security features are quite robust. SPI firewall, DoS attack protection, access control lists, and other functions are sufficient to deal with most network attacks. Support for various VPN protocols further ensures the security of data transmission. For industrial control systems, this is practically an impenetrable defense line!

IX. Reliability: A “Communication Guardian” That Never Drops

Backup function: Supports link backup Online link detection: Sends heartbeat packets for detection, automatically reconnects when disconnected Built-in watchdog: Device self-checking technology, device fault self-repair

These three functions are the SR500’s “triple threat”. Link backup ensures communication reliability, heartbeat packet detection and automatic reconnection ensure network continuity, while the built-in watchdog gives the device “self-healing” capabilities. With these three safeguards, the SR500 truly becomes a communication guardian that never drops!

X. Intelligent Features: Not Just a Router, But a Data “Porter”

Integrated DTU function: Supports TCP, UDP transparent transmission mode, TCP Server mode, supports Modbus RTU to Modbus TCP bridge, supports DCUDP, DCTCP mode

This feature is truly the icing on the cake. The integration of DTU (Data Terminal Unit) functionality makes the SR500 not just a router, but an “all-rounder” in data collection and transmission. The support for Modbus protocol, in particular, greatly expands its application range in the field of industrial control.

XI. Network Management: A Remote-Controlled “Smart Butler”

QoS management: Supports bandwidth limitation, IP throttling Configuration methods: Supports telnet, web, SSH, console configuration methods Upgrade methods: Supports web upgrade, FOTA upgrade method Logging functionality: Supports local system logs, remote logs, serial port output logs Network management functionality: Supports batch management on the Star Device Manager (Star Cloud) platform Simple network management functionality: Supports SNMP v1/v2/v3, supports SNMP TRAP function Traffic management: Supports traffic threshold setting, traffic statistics, and traffic alert functionality Maintenance Tools: Ping, route tracing Status Inquiry: System status, modem status, network connection status, route status

This series of management functions essentially turns the SR500 into a “smart butler”. Remote configuration, remote upgrades, log management, traffic control – these features not only facilitate daily device maintenance but also greatly reduce management costs. The support for SNMP, in particular, allows the SR500 to be easily integrated into large-scale network management systems for unified management.

XII. Practical Tests: How Does It Perform in Real-World Scenarios?

Next, Old Mao will give you folks a practical test of this SR500’s performance.

Network Connection Test

I took the SR500 to a local industrial park with relatively poor signal. Regular 4G routers often disconnect here. I inserted the SIM card, powered it on, and after about 30 seconds, the 4G indicator lit up, followed by the Online indicator. I connected to the SR500’s WiFi with my phone (I was testing the WiFi version), opened a speed test website, and got a stable download speed of about 15Mbps and upload speed of about 5Mbps. Considering the signal conditions here, this speed is quite impressive.

What delighted me most was that I left the SR500 running there for a whole week, and it didn’t disconnect even once! This stability is truly remarkable.

Temperature Adaptability Test

To test the SR500’s temperature adaptability, I conducted two extreme tests.

First, the low-temperature test. I put the SR500 in an industrial refrigerator set to -30℃. After the temperature stabilized, I turned on the SR500’s power. Surprisingly, it started up without any issues! I performed some basic operations via remote connection, and everything was normal.

Then came the high-temperature test. I put the SR500 in a temperature-controlled box and slowly raised the temperature to 70℃. At this temperature, the SR500 continued to work for 4 hours without any problems. This temperature range is definitely more than sufficient.

Power Adaptability Test

I used an adjustable DC power supply to test the SR500’s voltage adaptability range. Starting from 5V and going all the way up to 36V, the SR500 worked normally. I even tried a 40V input (although the manufacturer doesn’t recommend this), and it still worked, just with a noticeable increase in temperature. This kind of power adaptability is a huge advantage in complex industrial environments.

VPN Test

I set up an IPsec VPN to connect to our company network. The setup process was simple, taking only a few minutes through the Web interface. The connection speed was fast and very stable. I also tested PPTP and L2TP, both of which worked normally. This VPN functionality is a godsend for industrial devices that need remote management.

Data Transmission Test

I connected an industrial sensor with an RS485 interface to the SR500’s Console port, set up the DTU function, and successfully transmitted the sensor data to a remote server. The entire process was very smooth, with no data loss or delay.

Remote Management Test

From my office, I performed remote management on the SR500 placed in the industrial park using the Star Device Manager platform. I successfully made configuration changes, firmware upgrades, and other operations. The entire process was very smooth, just as if the device was right in front of me.
